At the invitation of the then Bishop of Simla, Rt Rev Dr John Burke, Mother Macrina, the Superior General, burning with missionary zeal sent the lively and enthusiastic Mother Gemma, Sr Florence, Sr Benilda and Ms Mary, the helper to Bathinda in Punjab, the Holy land of the Sikhs. On the 26th of January 1961, St Joseph’s School had its beginning with 13 children on roll and in 1962 a plot of land measuring 4½ acres was procured for the school and convent building. St Joseph’s made progress in great strides, soon to become one of the premier Educational Institutions in Punjab. Today it has about 3,000 students on its roll. There is a parallel Punjabi Medium School, to meet the educational needs of the local poor.
